NAACP Accomplishments

2010 NAACP ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In 2010, we addressed over 50 complaints.

January

*      Raised $724 Haiti Relief (Brentwood Christina Church led effort)

*      Received approval from national NAACP Office to compete locally in ACT-SO Competition – fist time Springfield ever competed

*      Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Celebration

*      Participant in the Multi Cultural Festival

*      Guest Speaker – Deborah Hartwig with OPFER Communications (employment opportunities)

*      Economic Development/Housing Committee participated in “Discussion on Race and Economic Development Panel”

February

*      Established Ex-Offender Standing Committee (led by Amin Walls)

*      Continuum of Care Representative  

*      Participant in Brentwood Christian Church’s Diversity Economic Development Conference

*      African American Read-In

*      Participant in Drury University’s Edward Jones Scholarship interviews

*      Economic Development/Housing Committee addressed purchasing and bidding issues

*      Co-Chair City of Springfield Global Perspective and Diversity Strategic Planning Committee

*      Religious Leaders Luncheon

*      Participant in the Review and Reorganization of the Mayor’s Office Human Rights Commission

*      Women in the NAACP (WIN) held a read-in at the Missouri Hotel

*      Members of the Youth Council participated in the Ozarks Technical College ACT Prep Exam

*      Met with elected officials to discuss various bills that affect civil and human rights

*      A member of the Good Community Civility Project

*      Asked to join United Way’s Female Leadership in Philanthropy

*      Sponsor of the Missouri State University African Descent Bar-b-que held at Phelps Grove Park

*      Religious Affairs Standing Committee Chair, Dr. Mary Newbern Williams joined Board of directors for Council of Churches

*      Attended Islamic Temple Open House

*      Assisted community in gaining ownership of Lincoln Memorial Cemetery

*      Worked with Queen City Hustle to facilitate community issues in the Silver Springs Park area

*      Economic Development Standing Committee had MoDOT in Springfield conduct MBE/WBE/DBE training on how to become certified

*      Leadership of the NAACP received an award from Gift of Time based on a nomination from the NAACP

*      Freedom Fund Ball held at Missouri State University with awards presented to:

o   Woman of Honor – Josephine Paschal

o   Community Citizens award – Calvin Allen

o   Business Partner Award – Big Momma’s Coffee House
